The jacket worn by our mascot will proudly display the winning name and will be introduced to the crowd during our Annual Fire Prevention Night on October 7th. The winner will receive a $100 gift card
and will be invited to ride with the Fire Chief in the 2011 Fourth of July

Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With

Monday, August 23, 2010
-
With Fire Prevention Week approaching, the Chalfont Fire Company wants to remind you to perform routine maintenance on your smoke alarms. First, ensure that the batteries are okay. We recommend changing the batteries at least twice a year. Even if you have "hard wired" or "electric" smoke alarms, these units usually have a space for a back up battery for use during power outages. Second, make sure the unit actually works, when you push the test button. Sometimes, even a new battery won't do the trick. Smoke alarms are only designed to have a life of approximately 10 years. Here are some other facts to consider:

- Most homes (96%) have at least one smoke alarm, however, only 75% of those homes have one working smoke alarm.
- Smoke alarms cut the risk of fire fatalities in half.
- In more than half of the reported home fires in which the smoke alarms were present but did not operate even though the fire was large enough, batteries were missing or disconnected. Nuisance alarms were the leading reason for disconnected alarms. DO NOT REMOVE THE BATTERY FROM A SMOKE ALARM FOR ANY REASON.
- In fires considered large enough to activate a smoke alarm, hard-wired alarms operated 91% of the time; battery-powered smoke alarms operated 75% of the time.
- Interconnected smoke alarms on all floors increase safety.

At approximately 1:15pm, Chalfont Firefighters were dispatched on Box 19-07, for the report of a dwelling fire on the 700 Block of Sandy Ridge Drive. Numerous callers reported a house on fire following an explosion. Chief 34 (McGuire) arrived onscene and found a Suburban Propane delivery truck had been delivering propane when an explosion occurred at the rear of the residence. Battalion 79 arrived onscene and established Doylestown Command, and asked Bucks County to dispatch multiple tankers and additional engines. Engine 34-1 (Lt. Bintner) responded and upon arrival the crew stretched a hand line to the rear of the dwelling to cool down the tank, while the crew from Engine 19-1 began interior operations. The Chalfont Fire Company was dispatched for a dwelling fire at approximately 5am on Rocky Court West in New Britain Township. Deputy 34 went responding and was advised that the police were on-scene reporting a working deck fire. Chief 34, Engine 34-1 (Batt. Schea), Engine 34 (Lt. Bair), and Ladder 74 also responded. Upon arrival, the crews of Engine 34-1 and Ladder 74 went into service with the booster line and knocked down the fire. They also used a thermal imaging camera to check for hot spots within the house. The Bucks County and New Britain Township Fire Marshal Offices investigated this fire, and narrowed the cause down to a faulty extension cord. This fire could have been much worse had it not been for the selfless actions of John Lake. Mr. Lake, a newpaper deliveryman, was delivering papers in the area when he smelled smoke. Mr. Lake investigated and found a rear deck to one of the units on fire. Mr. Lake dialed 911 while attempting to awake the residents who escaped without injury. Mr. Lake and the homeowner then attempted to put out the blaze using a neighbors garden hose and a fire extinguisher.
