Chalfont Chemical Fire Engine Company - History

History of the Chalfont Fire Company

The Chalfont Chemical Fire Engine Company #1 was founded in May of 1904, and the first piece of apparatus was bought in 1905. In 1924 a 400 gallon pumper was purchased for $4,000. The main station, Station 34 is still at 101 N Main St, Chalfont. We have added two substations to better serve the community. Station 54, the north station, was established in May of 1973 at the New Britain Township garage at Newville (Route 152 N.). In 1984, a ground breaking was held for Station 74, the west station, in the Highlands, off East Schoolhouse Road.

In 1950, the fire company started the ambulance squad, by receiving as a donation from the Chalfont Lions club a 1938 Packard.  The squad provided basic life support until 1995 when the state approved our upgrade to advanced life support status. In 1994, the fire company started to use paid emergency staff to provide 24 hour a day, 7 days a week staffing of the ambulance. The ambulance squad separated from the fire company in 2007. Chal-Brit Regional EMS is now located at 201 Park Avenue.

Additional support is given to the fire company by the Ladies Auxiliary, which was founded in 1925. The members of the Auxiliary hold fundraisers and give a substantial financial donation to the Fire Company each year. They also lend support to us by providing food and beverages at large fires.
